Definition of Cute

I haven't been able to get onto blogger all day, but one particular comment in the previous post really irritated me. The commentor had the audacity to say , "Cute=in dictionary is ugly but adorable. ". This phrase is nothing new, but what really gets to me is how it is simply quoted as being from a dictionary. A DICTIONARY? It is time to set the record straight. I defy anyone to show me WHICH dictionary (not bitchionary) has this idiotic definition. Let us verify our facts before saying things. These are definitions from Oxford, Merriam Webster and respectively, and NONE of these definitions are close, not even CLOSE, to that oft misquoted cliche. Let this dispel once and for all that erroneous definition of CUTE.

Sorry to steal the thunder from FDI, as Monday's posts would usually be about his saturday combat class. So, back to FDI's class.

Oh, before that, some additional glossary for sake of our highly esteemed Ben Tang from Singapore. Re his enquiry about the title FCI. Well, even Kings and Queens come and go, and the title moves on to the "original" FCI was indeed the same as the current FCI. SOmewhere along the line, he stopped teaching in MJH, and as I did not subscribe to passport membership, I could not attend any of his classes. As time went by, so too did the memory of FCI, until one day, another came in his place, and was crowned that title. Alas, his reign as FCI was shortlived, coz, 1. Original FCI made a comeback in MJH, 2. the 2nd FCI eventually left. Something like when King Richard Lionheart went to war and the throne taken over by Prince John.

Anyway, ya, back to FDI's class. Saturday as usual. Parking in the Curve, as sunshine and sidekick will attest, is becoming bad to worse. I hope FDI appreciates the effort, RM5, (toll both ways, parking ticket) and a good 15 minutes or so inhaling carbon monoxide in the parking lot. But the class always makes it worthwhile. FDI had just returned from a 2 week hiatus, and it was his first combat class. Oh, he's got a tan. Very slight, and in the studio lights, he still looks a whiter shade of pale.

In the middle of track 1, there was a black out!!! THere's something about a blackout that brings out the primal instincts of man and woman. As if by reflex, lights off elicit shouts and moans of esctasy. FDI was hesitant about proceeding with track 2, lest there were accidents in the dark. The lights kept coming on and off, not unlike a disco, which precipitated more shouts of esctasy. Woo, woo, kinda thing.

Apparently, he mentioned, "I tot I saw a puddy tat" but I didnt hear. Sunshine and Sidekick knew he was talking to me though. Missed it completely. I have to say I really enjoy this new release. So artistic. So inspiring. Hmm, what else happened? He made some boo boos, that's for sure, but like a diva in a concert, didnt bat an eyelash, and continued as if nothing happened. I wouldn't have realised actually were it not for the fact that sidekick was standing nearby.

Love love love that cooldown song by Andrea Bocelli and Patrizio Buane. Because We Believe or something like that.

ahh!! so desu ne! :) understooded now :) thanks for the clarification. and yes FCI gets my vote of cuteness as well (none of the ugly but adorable nonsense) as well

yes the cooldown song is "because we believe" we can sing the next time at dinner ;)

In the older versions of the Oxford Dictionary, it actually does state that Cute = Ugly but adorable. I kid you not. They revised it somewhere in the 21st century (probably so they won't get sued) to just say cute = adorable. So technically, the writer is right. :D

Omigosh, I thought you are from old skool..u should have seen the definition years ago..

From Uncyclopedia, the content-free encyclopedia.

This may be cute. But just imagine it's refusing to let you huff it and running across a field with all your sex toys.“It's cute!”

~ Oscar Wilde on cute
Sure, this looks cute, but imagine it's just farted a cloud of gas after digesting your kids.cute, adjective.

Pronuncation: CYOOT

Etymology: From the Greek, but then everything is from Greek, right? -Well you also have latin-derived words. -Oh, yer right, I'm so sorry, please don't kill me.

The all-purpose adjective. You can apply the word "cute" to anything you would like. Observe some real citations from the works of Oscar Wilde:

The baby is cute.
The doll is cute.
The cat is cute.
The dog is cute.
The Bunnies have warped my mind to make me think they are cute.
That smart-alek remark is cute.
The neko is dangerously cute.
Hookers from Elko are not cute.
Baked goods made out of fluffy animals are cute. (Such as a "Bunny cake")
There are even more varying examples found in Oscar Wilde's works.

Given all this, we can see the word "cute" has essentially no meaning whatsoever. Unless your calling your girlfriend cute, in that case it has all the meaning in the world. This is not at all due to the fact that if you dont call her cute, then she might break off the relationship, and as a uncyclopedia reader. I know you're a lonely lonely man. So you dont want to let anyone go, you sick bastard.

Wow, FCI is achieving celebrity status with news of him flashing across blogosphere....

I don't know Ah Girl, but i hope she is well...

Yes. Sunshine.. I feel for her too.. :-(

People appear to enjoy to wallow within their shallowness. Taunting suggestions that anyone who speaks out for FCI are in pursuit of him, and even suggesting that (or rather asking) friends of FCI (FBB and Choobacca) have changed their sexual preferences. Those who have been protective of FCI are frens of FCI, not secret admirers. Speaking of being gay in a prejudicial and bigotory tone is NOT acceptable.

At 11:48 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

and so those who have been protective of FCI's ah gal are frens of ah gal too ...

so easy to speak under the cloak of anonymity...hmmm tsk tsk.

Thank you all for your interest, concern etc for FCI and FCI gf (ex). Let me clarify, it is not my intention to turn this whole thing into a circus. Relationships are always complicated, and I guess FCI just wanted some cheering up, hence asked me to put on that "notice" on the blog. Of course, reasons for break up etc are entirely NONE OF OUR BUSINESS. As someone with the advantage of years behind him, and fair share of broken and failed relationships, I only have this to say. Those who are hurting now, perservere on, time does heal all wounds, and one day, when you look back, you might laugh a little, cry a little. (in my case, its the former). As Nels said, Choobacca and I are merely being a friend to FCI (and ah girl), trying to add some humour into an otherwise depressing situation. Attacks by certain parties, implying all sorts of things, really ought not to happen. This is supposed to be a friendly, happy blog, a blog that unites, rather than divide.

As if by some cosmic intervention, I have not been able to access blogger for the last two days, so can't comment, but feel compelled to post this via a friend, before the circus really goes to town.

To FCI and Girl, like yhsmom, we wish you both the best. If it's meant to be, then it's meant to be. And rest assured, those of us who consider yall our friends, will stick by you both.

I agree with you FBB.

At 1:19 PM, Anonymous fudge said...

yes..i agree with u FBB...we're all entitled to move on and get on with life...we're all mature enough to know when the relationship is not right..and if its not right then no point holding on to the other party or's fair to both parties to call it off and continue looking..

Well, when I broke up with my gal last year, I took a breather (some months), and didnt shout out my bachelorhood. I took time off, to think of what went wrong. I just find it too soon to announce.

At 2:50 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think FCI's intention was to announce. It was probably a cheesy joke that went bad. We should leave FCI alone instead of subjecting him to our judgement.

At 3:22 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, Nels, that sounds reasonable. I wish to tell my ex, that I m sorry that I did her wrong. I was unfair to her. She stood by me, and yet, I strayed.

At 3:44 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Manly, I'm sorry bout u and ur ex. However in FCI's case, I understand that he did not stray. It's just inevitable differences in a relationship.

Wishing you all the best Manly

My Dear Leonard

I have a copy of the 1984 edition of the Little Oxford Dictionary in my hand as I type this and its definition of "Cute" is:

(adjective. colloquial.)
clever, ingenious;
(U.S.) attractive.

There is no mention of "ugly but adorable" at all la!

PS: I miss your Thurs morning Pump class at Paragon!

At 6:05 PM, Blogger fatboybakes said...

i really should let the matter rest, but since someone pointed out that i was old skool, i refer to my trusty 1960 edition of oxford dictionary...i kid you not. the silverfish just leapt out at me.

anyway, interestingly enough, the definition of cute HERE, doesnt even REFER to aesthetic looks in any way. it says, CUTE: (colloq) clever, ingenious. i guess its like saying, oh, that's cute, when someone does something err, out of the ordinary.

so unless it appeared before 1960, or after 1984.... hmmm, i guess barring any further evidence, well, i take it as that lar hor, leonard. nyuck nyuck. high five buddy.

as for the other topic, no further comment. Manly, what an interesting pseudonymn. Like a suburb in Sydney.

At 6:06 PM, Blogger fatboybakes said...

oh, ben, i look forward to you guys' rendition of that very diva song, because we still believe.

At 1:53 AM, Blogger Leonard said...

My dear YHSMOM,

Well, since the matter is cleared, I think its time I bought a new dictionary. Haha.

Thanks for missing my pump class. I know you're very hard core... guess that means my pump class has at least a bit of standard? Hehe. :P

Anyway, I don't teach on Thurs mornings anymore. Have given up that pump class. :(

At 9:42 AM, Blogger fatboybakes said...

i'm sure your pump class is legendary. i hope to have the privilege one day of attending...not only pump, but step and combat as well.

At 12:03 PM, Blogger Leonard said...

Eh.. really. Its just a normal class. Well, maybe you'll get to try a class of mine soon? :)

At 1:45 PM, Anonymous yhsmom said...

FB I see you have conveniently left out that Leonard also teaches Jam!

My goodness...I never thought 80's soap operas are back in fashion, at least in the "blog-a-sphere", judging from the hoohahs surrounding FCI's pruported "declared" availability. After being away 4 four days... aiyo...all these q-ing lah, straights and fags lah...really makes the feuds between the Ewing clans (Dallas), the Colbys and the Carringtons (Dynasty) looks so errr dull. Anyway, I agree with those of you to let the matter rests. We like FCI and Ah Girl, and we find them to be really nice people, and we would really like to see them get back together. But whatever the reasons for the finale, we should let it remain between them. FCI and Ah Girl...we wish you both the best and take care ok?

Leonard...have heard so much about you from yhsmom. I would definitely want to try out your pump class at Paragon. So far, only managed to attend BS and BP with Julian and Rodney. Managed to do BC with Issey once as well. Will check out the FF timetable when we are in SGP next round.

O, have to burn the old American dictionary with the old definition of Cute..

At 6:03 PM, Blogger Leonard said...

yhsmom, technically FB is correct since I currently am not teaching any BODYJAM. So he is safe... until April where I'll pick it up again. ;)

At 6:56 PM, Blogger fatboybakes said...

leonard dear chap, i have NO idea what you're talking about. why wouldnt i be safe even if when you re-take up body jam ;) snigger. heh heh.

yhsmom, yar, nice attempt to trap me hor.

anonymous, seriously, if you do have a dictionary that carries that definition, I would gladly retract my statement. I just have yet to see it in print, all I want is to see it in print. I dont claim to be an english professor. so if your dictionary really got that, donttt burn. it's very precious. my 1989 webster, american, does not carry that definition.

MR & MRS LIONHEART, welcomme back! how strange you should refer to all those old tv soaps. i just made a reference to alexis and crystal carrington in my food blog just today. we are showing our vintage.

At 9:53 PM, Blogger Leonard said...

FBB dear chap, of course you know what I'm talking about. ;) You will give me face when I teach (if I ever teach) Jam in KL right? Hehe.

yhsmom... ehh... what have you been telling mr. & mrs. lionheart?

At 11:49 PM, Anonymous yhsmom said...

Leonard: Nothing to worry about la. I just told Lion that I enjoy your Pump class and you have many old hardcore tracks.

At 9:42 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dear FBB,
I am not kidding you that its American. My friends in USA told me that too, but it was dated back as far as 10-14 years ago. Now, you are right that its no longer the definition..especially in the British dictionary. And It was never defined as Ugly & adorable in British dict. American English differs from British. If i m not mistaken, I recalled that you came from pretigious Uni in England, thus, it explains your good command in English.
O btw, take good care of yourself when you exercise in BC or any form of high intensity classes. Its extremely strenuous. We are not teenagers anymore. I feel that too.

When I was in high school, I ran across a dictionary that had the definition of cute as "ugly, but endearing". It made an impact on me as that was 15 years ago and I still remember it to this day.
